The Burnt Chef project reports that 4 out of 5 hospitality professionals report having experienced at least one mental health issue during their career. The catering equipment industry and associated community is intrinsically linked to the hospitality industry and is no stranger to mental health issues.

Therefore ceda has set up a Mental Health and Wellbeing Group to work with external stakeholders to deliver Industry specific resources, training and support that is available to the entire Membership on an Industry level. We are looking to break down the stigma surrounding Mental Health issues and be a conduit for people struggling with Mental Health issues to get help now.

Working with the support of The Burnt Chef Project we will be able to offer:

⬤   24/7 crisis and emotional support text service

⬤   Ongoing therapy support

⬤   Mental Health, wellbeing & professional e-learning

⬤   Workshops for mental health, sleep, burnout & resilience

⬤   Workplace posters

The ceda Wellbeing Survey 2025

We recently conducted an industry-wide survey to understand the current state of mental health and wellbeing within the catering equipment industry.

This was with a view to put in place resources, strategies and initiatives that will directly help support colleagues and to break down the stigma of mental health within the sector.

All job roles, across businesses that supply, install, service, maintain and manufacture catering equipment, were invited to take part in the survey through direct emails, social media coverage and collaborating with organisations and industry influencers.

There were 35 questions covering areas including;

  • Current Mental Health Status
  • Work’s Impact on Mental Health
  • Burnout Experience
  • Recognition and Openness
  • Manager Relationships & Organisational Climate
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Out-of-Hours Communication & Digital Boundaries
  • Awareness of Wellbeing Support
  • Leadership Density & Readiness
  • Early Career Cohort & Pipeline

The results have been analysed, and some initial findings have been shared to give a snapshot as to the state of the mental health of the industry…

In a recent Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey conducted by ceda and The Burnt Chef Project, over half of those individuals who completed the survey said that in the month before they completed the survey their mental health was neutral to poor instead of thriving and again over half of all respondents said that they agreed that work had a negative impact on their overall mental health.

Within the survey it was highlighted how important it is to make sure that people have access to support and now how to access that support. That is where the Brew & Biscuit initiative comes in. The initiative is designed for companies or individuals to get together as a team or with a colleague to discuss how they are feeling and provide access to resources that offer help for those that require support with their mental health and wellbeing.

It can be as formal or informal as you like. It can be the entire team or just two of you meeting up on the road to catch up over a brew. It can be biscuits, cake or if the boss is feeling flush, pizza! It doesn’t matter. Just take the time to catch up and ask how people are, and importantly to listen. By displaying the posters that can be accessed below it gives your team free confidential access to helplines that will offer help and support to those in need.

By covering it on social media it helps to break down the stigma of mental health and promote wellbeing. Don’t forget to tag us in @ceda and use the hashtag #cedaWellbeing

Take a look at the showreel to see how Brew & Biscuit has been supported over the past 12 months, and get the kettle on!
