The Orchard Hotel Bar

Vision Commercial Kitchens

The refurbishment of The Orchard Hotel bar demonstrates how thoughtful, operationally driven design can have a transformational impact on business performance. Located within Nottingham Venues’ flagship hotel on the University of Nottingham campus, the project was initially conceived as part of a wider front-of-house refurbishment. However, Vision Commercial Kitchens quickly identified that the venue’s biggest challenge was not its appearance, but the way the bar functioned. Persistent bottlenecks, long queues and inefficient service were limiting revenue and negatively affecting the guest experience, particularly during high-footfall events such as graduations, conferences and sporting tournaments.

Rather than delivering a like-for-like replacement, Vision reimagined the entire operation. The key intervention was a complete reorientation of the bar, aligning it with natural customer flow and significantly increasing the available service frontage. Combined with carefully planned workstation layouts, dedicated serving positions and upgraded equipment, the redesign enabled staff to serve more customers simultaneously while reducing unnecessary movement and congestion behind the bar. The result was a more efficient operation that improved service speed, enhanced the customer experience and strengthened the relationship between the bar and adjacent restaurant.

Delivered within a live refurbishment programme and a tightly controlled budget, the project required close coordination with designers, contractors and hotel stakeholders to integrate new infrastructure around existing services and operational constraints. The completed scheme not only achieved its design objectives but also delivered a measurable commercial return, with the venue reporting a revenue increase of more than 60% following completion. It is a powerful example of how intelligent hospitality design can unlock hidden value, turning an underperforming space into a high-performing commercial asset.
