The Witchery by The Castle is a key part of James Thomson Restaurants, a multi award winning Edinburgh business which has been established for around 40 years.

Located at the top of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, as the name suggests just outside the grounds of Edinburgh Castle, the Witchery started life as a cafe, Boswell Court, James Thomson created the Witchery in 1979 having previously worked there as a waiter and went on to buy the business and develop the world renowned restaurant with rooms that we see today.

This has been a long-term rescue of Boswell’s Court, a sixteenth Century building in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town which is close to his heart. Now in it’s fifth decade, The Witchery is possibly Scotland’s best known restaurant with rooms, beloved by locals, visitors from across the globe and frequented by many celebrities. One meeting that Clive Groom had with Chef Dougie and the GM, was delayed when Chef and the team were focused on delivering breakfast for a well known “pop group” and their entourage who had sole occupancy of the hotel section of the Witchery for two days, and were checking out that morning.
