CEDA Member CHR Food Service Equipment has asked CEDA to help get word out that it is looking for industry-wide support to obtain a wish-list of commercial catering equipment to support the launch of the Real Junk Food Project Manchester’s plans for a café and restaurant. Not-for-profit Real Junk Food Project sources food that would normally go to waste, cooks it into amazing meals, and serves them to anyone on a pay-as-you-feel basis. They aim to stamp out food waste, campaign to make access to good food fairer and more sustainable, and support some of Manchester’s most vulnerable residents.
Paul Neville, CHR’s managing director, explains why this is a project that CEDA member and supplier companies should support, “This would be Manchester’s first waste food pay-as-you-feel café and restaurant. Real Junk Food Manchester is something really different for the city; it’s about inclusion, community and sustainability. They want to create a cool environment where the food and atmosphere are great, a place where people want to be, where all of the meals just happen to be made from wasted ingredients, and served on a pay-as-you-feel basis.
“They've identified a site just outside of the city centre where they can stay for six months and that’s just the beginning. They might need to move about a bit before finding a permanent home so they have been working with us here at CHR on the design, project management and installation of a mobile kitchen that can move into any space that has electricity and running water. Crucially, reducing waste is at the heart of everything they do and we are delighted to be providing our services free of charge to the project. What we do need now is help from the wider industry in sourcing equipment suitable for the mobile kitchen and its worthy cause. It may be an old sink, an odd bench kicking around in the warehouse, an ex-demo dishwasher that is just sitting there, a set of Taps, a rack, a freezer, or a refrigerator! No matter how small you think your contribution would be it clearly would be significant for the project at Real Junk food Manchester.”
Talking about the appeal for support from the foodservice equipment sector, Corin Bell, Real Junk Food Manchester’s project director, says, “We have worked hard since 2014 taking the concept of using waste food to feed people in a fair and sustainable way, and now following crowdfunding we are at the cusp of launching a fantastic venue to support local communities in Manchester and give access to great tasting, nutritional food, for many who may not be able to afford it all. We do need those with any suitable spare commercial catering equipment to donate it to help us reach the finish line in getting the project’s doors open. It will be greatly appreciated and make a real difference to many lives.”
